Bayern Munich took one step closer to the final four of the Champions League after registering a convincing 2-0 win over French club Olympique Marseille in the first leg of the quarter-finals of the competition.

Marseille nearly took the lead in the 7th minute of the game, when defender Rod Fanni powerfully headed in a brilliant cross by winger Mathieu Valbuena, which was denied by an equally impressive full length diving save by Manuel Neuer.

Meanwhile, Marseille's decision to play third-choice goalkeeper Elinton Andrade, due to Steve Mandanda's suspension, proved terribly wrong as he let in a tame shot from Mario Gomez', giving an undeserving lead to the German giants just a minute before half-time.

Bayern doubled their lead in the 69th minute via a brilliant close ranged strike by Dutch winger Arjen Robben off a Thomas Müller assist, giving Bayern a solid advantage in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals.
