After years of setting records after records the Beatles have done it again, this time they have been officially declared as the biggest selling singles act in the UK since the charts began 60 years ago in 1952 (the year queen Elizabeth took the throne), according to a list compiled by the Official Charts Company.

The "Help" hitmakers, have been at the top of the charts on seventeen occasions during their career span of eight years, continue to have a strong fan base despite breaking up nearly 40 years ago.

And, although, artists like Elvis Presley and Cliff Richard have had a longer career span than the Beatles, they still did not manage to outsell the talented quartet.

Elvis, who has had good sales in the past 10 years due to the reissue of his earlier tracks including "A Little Less Conversation", "Jailhouse Rock" and "That's All Right," ranks in second place.

Sir Cliff Richard, who has been at the top of the chats 14 times, ends up in third place, while Madonna, also a very popular artist in the 1980's, ranks fourth.

Apart from the oldies, there are a number of contemporary artists who have made it on the list.

R&B artist Rihanna leads the list of recent artists at number ten, ahead of some legendary names including the Rolling Stones and Stevie Wonder, who have been placed at the 13th and 16th position respectively.

Rapstar Eminem, David Guetta and Coldplay have been placed in the 18th, 49th and 60th position respectively. However, recent Soul/ Pop sensation Adele, who has broken many sales records this year, has surprisingly not made it to the list.

"This list is intriguing, Adele is missing and we've all forgotten just how huge artists such as Shakin' Stevens, Boney M and UB40 were in the UK in the Seventies and Eighties," said Jeff Smith (BBC's Radio 2 head of music), according to The Independent.

"This chart offers a fascinating look at the past 60 years in music and shows the impact that modern stars like Rihanna and Katy Perry have had. The list is really varied and will provide something for everyone," Tony Blackburn (BBC's Radio 2 disk jockey) was quoted by The Metro as saying.
