Police discovered the bodies of a 62-year-old man and a 58-year old woman inside the property in Friary Road, Handsworth Wood.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said it appeared the couple were subjected to an assault.

Forensic specialists are combing the area, while local CCTV footage is being analysed.

"We are going to do everything we can to find those responsible as quickly as possible," said Dept Supt Richard Baker.

"We have 60 officers working on this inquiry and neighbourhood officers are out in the local area delivering reassurance as quickly as possible.

"This is a major investigation with a number of extremely fast inquiries being undertaken."
