An 11-month-old baby girl has died after been mauled by a dog at a house in Blackburn, police have said.

The baby was taken from the address in Emily Street to Royal Blackburn Hospital but died of her injuries.

A 26-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman have been arrested on suspicion of child neglect following the infant's death and are currently in police custody.

It is not known what relationship the two people have with the girl, but it is believed the 11-month-old was not at her home address at the time of the attack.

The dog has been seized from the address by police. Tests are to be carried out to determine the breed of the dog.

No one else was injured during the incident.

Det Supt Simon Giles, of Lancashire Police, said: "This is a tragic incident and specially trained officers are offering support to the wider family and a full investigation is under way."

A spokesperson for North West Ambulance Service said: "We got a call at 22.59 to Emily Street.

"We sent a rapid response vehicle and two ambulances.

"They got to the scene within five minutes to reports of a dog attack."

Officers are continuing to carry out enquiries at the scene and investigating the circumstances of what happened.
