Blacklist season 3
Liz and Tom with their newborn daughter Agnes NBC

Blacklist season 3 offered its most shocking episode until now by killing off a major character, and a fan favourite one at that. Episode 18, titled Mr Solomon: Conclusion, left Elizabeth (Megan Boone) and Tom Keen's future in the dark after a huge plot twist. The weddings in Blacklist always end in blood and this time too there was no difference even if it was the most awaited nuptial of the show (Liz and Tom were getting remarried after all).

Liz undergoes a C-section to bring her baby safely into the world but succumbs to post-delivery complications on the hospital bed (the amniotic fluid seeps into her blood). The shocking twist in the show has sparked major outrage from fans but James Spader (Red) has neither confirmed nor denied her death.

"I think it's most prudent not only as just myself and what I know or don't know for that but also in terms of the character of Reddington: Elizabeth Keen is dead," he told Entertainment Weekly.

Meanwhile, Ryan Eggold (Tom) has said that he "enjoyed" working with Boone. "I was as shocked as I think the fans are! I have loved working with Megan, especially as we explored the complicated dynamic in Liz and Tom's relationship. I'm incredibly curious to see how this deep cut affects Tom's understanding of the world and what this means for the future of their daughter," he told TV Line.

Blacklist season 3 episode 18 recap:

In episode 17, Liz and Tom decide to get married despite Raymond "Red" Reddington's serious objection. But their hush-hush wedding ceremony is interrupted by Mr Solomon prompting them to leave the chapel. Later, Red transports her to a private facility where Nick calls for an emergency C-Section as the pregnant bride has started bleeding.

"Congratulations, you have a healthy, beautiful baby girl," Nick tells Liz after the surgery. Liz names her daughter Agnes before losing consciousness. The doctor shouts in panic "We're losing her, Harold. We're losing Elizabeth."

The usually tough Red cannot hold back his emotions and pleads with Nick to keep the new mother alive. "Keep her heart beating, Nick. Please just keep her heart beating."

However, all efforts fail when she stops breathing. Nick tells Red "Liz died." Red informs Tom that they have lost Liz and there is nothing he could have done.

But can Elizabeth Keen be really dead? Knowing Red's protective attitude towards her and how far he can go to shield the people he loves, there is a possibility that he might have enacted the whole death drama to save Liz from the chaos and perhaps Tom. It will be interesting to see what happens in the upcoming untitled episode. Blacklist airs every Thursday on NBC.
