Inglourious Basterds star and two-time Oscar-winner Christoph Waltz has reportedly boarded Bond 24 in an uncertain role.

The Daily Mail, who last month claimed French actress Lea Seydoux was to be the next Bond Girl, cite multiple sources with knowledge of the project.

Speaking of Waltz's role in the film one source said: "It's not immediately evident whether the part's friend, or foe, or a bit of both." Another said the character is "extremely cunning" and "a nemesis of sorts".

Daniel Craig will return as James Bond alongside returning stars Ralph Fiennes, Ben Wishaw, Naomie Harris and Rory Kinnear, as well as returning Skyfall director Sam Mendes. Wrestler and Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista has also been linked to a henchman role.

Bond 24 will enter production next month following a table-read of the script in a couple of weeks' time. This means an official announcement regarding the full cast can expected to be made shortly.

Last week it was revealed that playwright and Edge of Tomorrow scribe Jez Butterworth had been hired – as he was for Skyfall – to give the script by John Logan a final sprucing up before production begins.

Bond 24 will be released on 23 October 2015.
