Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has confirmed the Premier League giants will offer right-back Jon Flanagan a new contract to commit his long-term future to Anfield amid Glen Johnson's uncertain future at the club.

The 22-year-old versatile defender played an important role last campaign while covering the absences of both Jose Enrique and Glen Johnson, but has missed the entirety of the current season after suffering a knee injury against Preston North End in a pre-season friendly on 19 July.

Even though his contract at the Premier League giants is due to expire this summer, Rodgers has claimed he expects him to sign a new deal to commit his future to Liverpool.

"Hopefully Flanno's contract will be sorted out," Rodgers said to Liverpool Echo after the defender returned to full training last week ahead of the last an crucial part of the campaign.

"He is working his way back to fitness and when that happens I am sure the contract will get sorted out. He is a big part of the future here. He did remarkably well last year and showed he is a player who can play for many years at this level."

Rodgers bolstered both defensive flanks this summer by signing Spanish duo Alberto Moreno from Sevilla and Javier Manquillo – on loan from Atletico Madrid for two seasons - but with Jonhson's future at the club uncertain, the manager wants Flanagan to stay.

Nevertheless, Johnson himself recently suggested he will leave Anfield at the end of the season once his contract with the Premier League giants expires after entering into talks with unnamed foreign clubs.

"I do like the idea of going abroad. There have been talks. I'm still young and it would be great for the kids. But I'm not thinking about that at the moment. We will have to wait and see," Johnson admitted.
