A teenage girl from Gloucester has been arrested for allegedly attacking an elderly Indian man in public and spitting on his face before walking away.

The 19-year-year old was arrested after a video of the attack, which took place at 8:30pm at the Coventry City Centre on 10 August, went viral.

The attack, in which the man was pushed and thrown to the ground by the girl, left him with a bloody nose and a black eye, a Mail Online report said.

In the video footage of the attack, the teenager can be seen kicking the man before punching him and shoving him to the ground.

The girl then takes off the man's turban and spits on his face before walking away. Some reports claim the girl was drunk.

The video, understood to have been captured by a passerby on his mobile phone, has sparked outrage.

The girl was arrested at around 6.30pm on Friday after police tracked her down.

"This was a despicable, violent attack on an elderly man in broad daylight. The victim is an 80-year-old man - he was left with a bloodied nose and a black eye. A video showing the assault spread rapidly on social media and quite rightly the offender's actions are being condemned by everyone who's viewed it," Coventry Police chief superintendent Andy Nicholson said.

Police are still waiting for witnesses to come forward and explain what led up to the attack.

The police have also asked the public not to upload or share more video or still footage of the attack, as it may prove prejudicial to a prosecution.

Anyone who can help should contact West Midlands Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
