A British woman in Portugal is said to be in a critical condition after she was stabbed several times.
The 40-year-old is currently being treated at a hospital in the popular holiday resort of Albufeira on the coast of Portugal.
Her alleged attacker is a 22-year-old British man who was found at a nearby bust stop shirtless and barefoot.
He is now in custody and is due to appear in court tomorrow.
A spokesman from the Foreign Office confirmed that the woman is receiving consular support.
"We are aware of the hospitalisation of a British national on 29 May in Portugal. We are providing consular assistance. We are aware of the arrest of a British national on 29 May in Portugal. We stand ready to provide consular assistance."
Albufeira in the Faro district in the Algarve is one of the most popular holiday destinations among Britons at the moment.
