Demi Moore has reportedly confided in friends that she is embarrassed about her recent public meltdown.

Sources close to the heartbroken star say that her ego has been badly bruised as a result of her stay in hospital for treatment for mental health issues.

The normally private Hollywood actress has been rapidly unravelling following her split from estranged husband Ashton Kutcher, who replaced Charlie Sheen in the hit comedy Two and a Half Men.

Moore, 49, who called time on their six-year marriage amid speculation that Kutcher cheated on her, hit the headlines when she was admitted to hospital after suffering a seizure.

She has also come under a barrage of scrutiny in recent months over rumours of anorexia and substance abuse, among other problems stemming from the split.

According to People magazine, the actress who built up an image of polish and glamour is now struggling to cope in the aftermath of her public breakdown.

An insider told the magazine: "Ego-wise, this is the worst thing that could happen to Demi, because she's such a private person. She's embarrassed."

The source also claims that Moore is finding comfort in her faith, Kabbalah (Jewish mysticism), in which adversity can be viewed as a "gift" for learning and growth.

"[Her problems] can be an opportunity, a blessing, and not a curse," the source said.

Moore is not the first, and certainly will not be the last, celebrity to have a public breakdown.

Even the stars who seem to be the most self-assured, self-controlled and self-motivated can fall apart at the seams in shocking ways.

From Britney Spears to Charlie Sheen and Kerry Katona, we take a look at other stars who have also suffered very public meltdowns.
