Charing Cross station in London has reopened after a security alert was triggered by a suspicious package.

Metropolitan Police officers were called to the station, in the City of Westminster, at 9.39am to reports of the package.

Passengers were evacuated from the station, which is the capital's fifth busiest, and eye witnesses reported streams of police entering the building.

The alert was stood down shortly before 10am when the package was found to be an item of lost property.
