Jose Mourinho says he considers Liverpool to be title contenders.

Jose Mourinho has revealed he thinks Liverpool will be in contention to win the Premier League title and insists that Chelsea are still very much in the mix despitea mixed start to the season.

After a shock loss to Everton at the weekend the Blues were in for more pain in the Champions League, losing 2-1 to Basel at Stamford Bridge in their first group game.

Their lack of form has left some questioning whether Chelsea will be the serious title contenders they looked in the off-season as the side got their beloved manager back and refreshed the squad with new faces. But Mourinho insists they are one of five teams, including Liverpool, that are still very much in the race for the Premier League trophy.

He told reporters: "The first thing I have to say is that we lost nothing [after the Basel defeat]. We didn't finish third in the Champions League group, we weren't relegated to the Europa League and we didn't finish third in the Premier League.

"We've lost one match in the Premier League. The other five contenders for the title - all of them lost a match except Liverpool.

"And in the Champions League we lost a match that we cannot lose - but we were not relegated to the Europa League.

"So if you like to make comparisons, you have to wait because it's not the way you start, it's the way you finish."

While you cannot read much into the table at this stage of the season, Chelsea currently sit sixth behind the other five teams whom Mourinho sees as his main challengers this season.

Liverpool have made an impressive unbeaten start and are currently top of the table. Their buys over the summer have so far been successful and Brendan Rodgers' effort in creating more depth in the squad has made them a much harder side to beat.

And the fact that the Merseyside club have no European football this season could serve to work in their favour as they focus solely on winning their league games.
