Chelsea's supporters are the most racist in the Premier League, according to damning Home Office statistics.

Figures over the last 13 seasons reveal that Blues followers have been arrested 27 times for racist or indecent chanting, the most from any club to have played in the top flight in each those campaigns.

Over the seasons recorded by the government department, the club's fans who have committed the most offences in English football are Stoke City with 28, although that includes while the club were in the Championship and League One.

Leeds United, Sunderland and West Ham United's fanbase have each suffered 24 arrests while Tottenham Hotspur are the next Premier League club on the list with 18 fans having been detained by police.

The most fans from a single club arrested during a single term was West Ham in the 2012/13 season, a campaign which included an incident where fans were heard singing anti-Semitic chants towards rival Tottenham fans in November 2012.

The news comes less than 24 hours after a video allegedly showing Chelsea fans singing racist songs and pushing a black French man off a Paris metro train prior to their Champions League tie against PSG emerged online, with the club pledging to ban any season-ticket holders or members implicated.

Uefa have refused to intervene in the investigations however the episode threatens to overshadow the London club's reputation.

Despite a string of incidents of racism within football in recent season, which has seen Luis Suarez and John Terry both serve hefty bans after being found guilty by The Football Association, the number of arrests in the 2013/14 season was halved from the previous campaign.

Numbers of arrests for racist chanting has been on the slide since the 2010/11 campaign, where the offence reached a three-year high of 43, although the latest incident will likely only inflame calls for greater equality within the game.
