Real Madrid defender Raphaël Varane, who is a summer target for Chelsea, has hinted that he will remain with the 10-time European champions next season.

The French defender was heavily linked with a move away after failing to consistently feature in manager Carlo Ancelotti's first-team plans, with Stamford Bridge touted as his next destination.

Jose Mourinho is a big admirer of the player he signed from Lens during his stint as the Spanish capital club's manager and is keen to be reunited with him at Stamford Bridge. The Portuguese manager sees him as a long-term replacement for John Terry, who is in the twilight years of his career.

At 22, the French defender is a regular for his national team, but faces competition from Pepe in the Real team. The manager has kept faith in him this season and the former Lens player has started 35 games in all competitions this year.

Varane has now admitted that he is keen to win the La Liga title with the soon-to-be outgoing European champions next season, and that rules out a move away from the club.

Barcelona wrapped up this season's title with a win at the home of the defending champions Atletico Madrid, and the French defender admits that their losses in crucial matches during the course of the season denied them the chance to challenge the Catalans for the title.

"In the field we have always given everything and we will do it against Getafe. The team has always been professional, we wanted to win but we did not succeed," Varane said, as quoted by Tutto Mercato Web.

"In the decisive moments of the season we could not win crucial matches due to bad luck. The next year, however, we want to win the Liga," the French defender added.

Apart from Chelsea, Premier League rivals Manchester United were also interested in signing him as Louis van Gaal looks to strengthen his defence ahead of next season.
