In a chilling discovery, Beijing police recovered a newborn baby girl from a lavatory pipe.

Police were alerted to the lavatory after local residents heard the newborn's cries from the public lavatory.

Upon investigation, a newborn baby believed to have been delivered inside the lavatory was found upside down in the squat lavatory.

Pictures circulating across social media show a police officer identified as Qian Feng holding the newborn.

"Her head was upside down and her body was falling into the drain. We could only vaguely see her feet from the side," said Feng, reported CNN.

"She just kept crying. I looked again, and thought we should try to pull her out even if the possibility might be slim."

The baby whose parents remain unidentified is believed to have incurred no injuries and was confirmed to be in stable condition, according to Beijing Times.

In 2014, a baby hatch was shut down in Guangzhou after a major rise in the number of abandoned babies.

The baby hatch was set up in a bid to offer a safe place for abandoned babies.
