A man has quit his job at Stansted Airport by baking his colleagues a resignation cake.

Chris Holmes, aka Mr Cake from Cambridgeshire, delivered the cake to "The Management" at the Border Force in Stansted on his birthday on 15 April.

In his message, he tells how he has reassessed his life and decided to go forward full-time with his business venture as a professional cake baker.

The white iced cake reads: "Today is my 31st birthday, and having recently become a father I now realise how precious life is and how important it is to spend my time doing something that makes me, and other people, happy.

"For that reason I hereby give notice of my resignation, in order that I may devote my time and energy to my family, and to my cake business which has grown steadily over the past few years.

"I wish the organisation and my colleagues the best for the future and I remind you that if you enjoy this cake, you can order more at www.mrcake.co.uk."

Holmes' brother-in-law Stuart Jackson shared the picture of the resignation cake on Twitter, dubbing him "Jerry Maguire meets Masterchef".

Social media users took to Twitter to express praise for Holmes.

Fellow baker Miss Cakehead, who creates gruesome cakes for evilcakehead.com, said Holmes' creation was "fabulous", adding that it had made her day.

Steven Livingstone wrote: "His cake writing is better than my handwriting. Impressive." David Prescott said: "Such a brilliant and classy resignation letter. I wish you all the very, very best!"

Steve Doherty added: "Fantastic. Hats off to him and best of luck to Mr Cake!"

The picture of the cake had been viewed over one million times on Reddit. Speaking about the response, Holmes tweeted: "Incredible! I put the photo on my personal FB page and somehow it went viral. I'm overwhelmed by the positive response!!"
