Sony announced its new range of Xperia smartphones in August at the IFA 2012 trade show in Berlin. Among the smartphones, the Xperia J which is a mid-range device, features a 1GHz Qualcomm processor and comes in black, gold, white and pink. The Xperia J has now received the CyanogenMod 10 (CM10) Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) ROM, courtesy FreeXperia Project (FXP).

The Xperia J comes with a 4in display which has a decent FWVGA resolution (480 x 854), in addition to a Gorilla Glass to protect the screen. It features a five megapixel rear-facing camera featuring auto-focus and LED flash.

Pre-requisites:

  • Backup all important data and ensure the device has minimum 60 percent battery charge
  • Remove anti-virus tools if installed
  • Enable USB debugging

To install CM10 Jelly Bean ROM on Sony Xperia J:

  • Download the ROM zip file from here
  • Copy the zip file to the root folder of the device's SD card and boot it into recovery mode
  • In the recovery mode, use volume buttons to scroll
  • Make a Nandroid backup in recovery mode
  • Choose Wipe > Wipe Data and perform Dalvik Cache wiping if you do not want to experience Low on memory issues
  • Navigate through the interface and choose Select Zip from SD Card and then select the zip file
  • After update is applied, flash the Gapps and go back to choose Reboot

CM10 Jelly Bean ROM should now be installed and running on Sony Xperia J
