Chelsea fight with Manchester United to sign Inter's Fredy Guarin

Chelsea have already approached Inter Milan midfielder Fredy Guarin to sign him in the upcoming transfer window, according to his agent.

Reports in Italy claimed recently that the Colombian international, who has also been linked with Manchester United, is close to moving to Stamford Bridge as Jose Mourinho's side are set to pay £15m to the Italian side to secure his services.

Mourinho suggested lately that Chelsea will not make any move in the New Year but according to Guarin's agent, Marcelo Ferreyra, the Blues have already meet with him to discuss a January deal.

"We have already been to London with Inter and met with Chelsea directors to make their interest formal" Ferreyra told Colombian radio station Radio Caracol.

"If both clubs reach an agreement, a transfer is an option, but Fredy is happy at Inter as well if they don't agree terms,"

Nevertheless, Chelsea's Capital One Cup defeat against Sunderland showed they need reinforcements and Guarin could be a good signing to complete a midfield which has lacked effectiveness after Kevin De Bryune's long term injury.

Frank Lampard and Ramires have been the starting duo for Jose Mourinho at the start of this season with Obi Mikel as their main back up, as Michael Essien is no longer a key player for the Portuguese boss.

Guarin can play equally comfortably in the centre of the midfield or on the right side and this season he has scored three goals and grabbed six assists in 16 domestic league games for Inter Milan.

The 27-year-old midfielder is also an important player for Colombia and according to his agent this issue could also be a key factor in his decision to move to Stamford Bridge.

"Fredy feels that at Inter he has manager Walter Mazzarri's trust. The upcoming World Cup also plays a role. We will also meet with the Inter owner to see what the project looks like here" Ferreyra said.
