Actor and television presenter Stephen Fry has married his partner Elliott Spencer.

57-year-old Fry confirmed the news to his 8.5 million followers on Twitter, posting a picture showing him and his 27-year-old partner signing a marriage register.

The QI host tweeted: "Gosh. @ElliottGSpencer and I go into a room as two people, sign a book and leave as one. Amazing."

The wedding reportedly took place in the Breckland Business Centre, which houses the register office.

The men both wore green carnations for the occasion and while their guest list is not known, Fry joked that their vows had been witnessed by an Oscar Wilde doll.

"Oh and @ElliottGSpencer and I had our vows witnessed by a mini Oscar Wilde. Because one should."

News of the impending nuptials was first made public eleven days ago, when the comedian gave formal notice to wed at a register office in Dereham, Norfolk, near where he grew up.

After the wedding plan was revealed, Fry said on Twitter that he was "very very happy" to announce his marriage to the writer with whom he has been in a relationship for a year. He wrote: "Oh. It looks as though a certain cat is out of a certain bag. I'm very very happy of course but had hoped for a private wedding. Fat chance!"

According to reports, the couple's surprise engagement came after a whirlwind romance which started in the summer of 2014. They went public with their relationship in November.

Fry is believed to have found happiness with Spencer, who is 30 years his junior, less than three years after attempting suicide.

In 2012, Fry tried to take his own life while filming abroad. He has publicly discussed his battle with bipolar disorder and mental health issues.

Derren Brown was among the first to congratulate the couple once news of their wedding was shared, responding to the photograph with: "Gor.geous xxx."

Fry's former comedy partner, House star Hugh Laurie, tweeted his congratulations writing: "Bloody hell it's happened! @ElliottGSpencer has made an honest man of m'col. Love and happiness to all!!!"

The newlyweds thanked their well-wishers for their messages. "Thank you all SO much for your kind congratulations. Deeply touched xxx," wrote Fry.

Spencer added: "Thank you for all the lovely messages :) x x x."

Spencer's father Robert, who at 57 is the same age as his new son-in-law, said he and his wife Melanie, 52, are delighted to welcome Fry into their family.

"We are obviously very happy. We are over the moon, that is all I want to say."
