Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo, who has been linked with a move back to Old Trafford under the new manager Louis van Gaal, has an £800m release clause in his current contract, according to his agent Jorge Mendes.

In an interview with the Spanish publication AS, the agent said Cristiano is quite happy with his current club and wants to retire there in spite of rampant speculation linking him with a move to his former club.

Ronaldo has been crowned World Player of the Year and with United in a spending spree under their new manager, it was speculated that the Dutchman would now set his sights on the Portuguese star.

It was also speculated that he would start a new uprising at United by forming a team of winners including Radamel Falcao, Angel di Maria, Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie and Ronaldo.

Mendes dismissed all speculation stating that the player is "committed" and "happy" at his current club and that he does not get any more calls regarding the player as it has been established that he will not be leaving the club in the near future.

The news will come as a major shock for the United faithful who were hoping that the lure of Van Gaal will be able to seduce Ronaldo back to the ground where he attained his legendary status.

United have finally managed to come out of their slump and are currently in the fourth position with 11 points, one point ahead of Arsenal, who are languishing in the seventh.

However, with their easy run of games set to come to an end, Van Gaal has to make sure that his team is ready to face teams like Chelsea and Manchester City, which are set to put up their first big challenge in their quest for Champions League football.

The Dutchman has been lauded for his efforts by none other than the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson, who has hailed him for putting his own mark on the team and expects the former Ajax man to come good as the season progresses.
