Roma have told Manchester United to forget about signing Daniele De Rossi on transfer deadline day, insisting neither the player nor the club are willing to listen to offers.

The Premier League champions have been exasperated in their attempts to add to their midfield numbers this summer, having failed with bids for Cesc Fabregas and Anders Herrera already this summer with the club yet to meet Everton's valuation of Marouane Fellaini.

Reports in the Italian press suggested that United tabled an offer in the region of €12m for Italy international De Rossi on Friday afternoon as there desperation to bring in reinforcements grows.

But club director Mauro Baldissoni has ruled out the possibility of a deadline day move.

"We will not accept any offers for De Rossi and he has no intention of leaving," Baldissoni was quoted as saying by Corriere dello Sport when asked of the midfielder's future.

"He is part of the club's history."

Roma head coach Rudi Garcia gave a similar response when quizzed on the powerful midfielder's future, indicating that a move away from the Stadio Olimpico may have been a possibility earlier in the transfer window, a situation which has been since resolved.

"We spoke when he came back from his holidays," Garcia was quoted as saying by the Daily Express.

"We said that if it got past a certain date he would remain with us. He will stay here for the season and that satisfies me a lot."

United are still yet to make a significant addition to their team this summer, with the club's only piece of incoming business the signing of 20-year-old full back Guillermo Varela. David Moyes' side are expected to return with an improved bid for Everton midfielder Fellaini before tonight's 11pm deadline with Everton hoping to sign James McCarthy from Wigan to replace the Belgian.

However Everton would now appear more confident of retaining the services of Leighton Baines, who United have also bid for this summer. Moyes' side have already seen a £12m bid for the England full back rejected while the Toffees dismissed a "derisory and insulting" offer of £28m for both Baines and Fellaini last month.
