Football superstar David Beckham has announced his retirement from the sport at the age of 38.

With a career spanning 20 years, playing for illustrious clubs Manchester United, Real Madrid and AC Milan, as well as representing England with 115 caps, the most for an outfield player, he leaves the game as arguably the most iconic British sportsman of the modern age and one of the most marketable celebrities on the planet.

Over the weekend, he became the first British player to win domestic titles in four different countries after claiming the Ligue 1 championship with PSG, whom he joined in January.

But Beckham is just as famous off the field as on it. Married to former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham, East London born Beckham is a not only a fashion icon but a global ambassador for the sport, playing a crucial role in securing London the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012.
