Reports just in say that a number of people have been killed at the BP Algeria gas plant, in fierce fighting between the Algerian army who have surrounded and attacked the plant and the Islamist militants who are holding a number of western workers hostage. Militias claim at least 34 hostages and 14 kidnappers have died. But there are no confirmed figures as yet.

But the BBC has confirmed that two British hostages from Scotland, a Kenyan and a French hostage have been freed by the army and they follow the other hostages who escaped yesterday.

Meanwhile BP, which is involved in the gas plant, has said that non-essential workers are being moved out of Algeria as a precautionary measure
