Overview

Dominic Thiem broke new ground for himself after making his first Grand Slam quarter-finals following his four set win over Marcel Granollers, which set up a clash with friend and practice partner David Goffin. The highly-rated Austrian has had an impressive season and has already captured three tour level titles this season, with two of them coming on clay. He has also recorded wins over Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal during the course of the season, with the win over the latter coming during his run to the title at the Argentina Open.

Goffin has similarly had an impressive campaign and despite not having won any titles like his opponent, he has recorded semi-finals appearances at the Miami and Indian Wells Masters tournaments. He also made the round of 16 at the Australian Open, which will bode well for his clash against Thiem in the quarter-finals with the winner awaiting a clash with either Novak Djokovic or Tomas Berdych in the last semi-finals.
