US television host Joe Scarborough has claimed that Donald Trump is suffering from "early stages of dementia."

Speaking live on air during MSNBC's Morning Joe, he discussed the temperament of Donald Trump as the president of the United States.

Scarborough claimed that Trump was "completely detached from reality.

"You have somebody inside the White House that the New York Daily News says is mentally unfit."

"That people close to him say is mentally unfit, that people close to him during the campaign told me had early stages of dementia." Scarborough said. He added, under Trump's leadership the country had moved closer to war on the Korean Peninsula than most Americans know.

"We heard this months ago, that we are going to have a ground war in Korea, they believe that inside the White House for a very long time."

Scarborough and Trump have rowed on numerous occasions, as recently as this week, when Trump called for an investigation into the death of a member of staff found inside the office of a GOP congressman back in 2001.

The TV presenter spoke about the use of the 25th amendment, which is in place to remove a president should they be deemed to be unfit to continue in the role.

Scarborough pleaded with Trump's cabinet members, telling them that they served the US public and not Trump.

Trump's temperament has been the centre of attention in the past couple of days after he retweeted three tweets from the deputy leader of the far-right group, Britain First.

In the UK, Theresa May condemned these actions as "wrong" while other MPs have called for his proposed state visit to be cancelled.
