Ben Mitchell comes out as gay in the middle of the Queen Vic this week on EastEnders BBC

Ben Mitchell's life could come to a bitter 'ender' after a catastrophic accident on BBC soap EastEnders in an upcoming episode.

Harry Reid, who plays the mechanic son of now-alcoholic Phil Mitchell, may be departing Albert Square after obtaining injuries that leave him in a critical condition in hospital. Phil and his half-brother will receive the "terrible news" about Ben before rushing to the hospital to be by his side.

The anguished pair are in for a long wait before they find out whether Ben will survive his injuries or not. Ben has been at the centre of numerous explosive storylines in the past year, including having a secret gay fling with his now-boyfriend Paul Coker while in a heterosexual relationship with Abi Branning.

Ben's new accident-related storyline will pave the way for Paul's exit also, with actor Jonny Labey confirming the news that he will be leaving the soap. A spokesman for EastEnders said: "We can confirm Jonny will be leaving the show later this year. We wish him all the best for the future," Mirror Online reports.

An insider added: "Jonny is leaving in a couple of months as part of an explosive storyline. "Bosses are keeping tight lipped about what's in store but there's plenty of drama in store for Paul before he leaves."

Lin Blakley, who plays Paul's grandmother Pam in EastEnders, is sad about the news. She told Inside Soap: "It's going to be awful. Les and Pam will miss their grandson, but I will miss Jonny as he is such a dear boy. I would imagine it's going to be hell for Paul's boyfriend Ben, whatever happens, and I am sure there will be a few gasps from the audience who'll think, 'My gosh, I didn't see that coming!"'

Viewers will soon find out what fate awaits Ben and Paul, just as Phil came to terms with the relationship and accepted the latter into the family.

Watch EastEnders on Monday night on BBC1 at 8pm.
