Egypt's interior minister Mohamed Ibrahim has survived an assassination attempt in Cairo's eastern Nasr City district, a stronghold of the Muslim Brotherhood.

A bomb went off near the minister's home but it was unclear whether it was a suicide or remote control attack.

At least seven people, including a child, were injured, according to Egypt's ambulance authority. Egyptian police said that two assailants died in the explosion, which state TV described as "an assassination attempt".

Nasr City is a hotbed of major protests by supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi. It was stormed by police on 14 August and thousands of people were killed.

Ibrahim has been among those responsible for the violent crackdown on supporters of Morsi.

The attack marked the first time a senior government official had been targeted since the military coup on 3 July.
