Sir Elton John is in "shock" following the death of his mother, Sheila Farebrother, at the age of 92.

Taking to social media, the Candle In The Wind singer paid tribute to his mother with whom he rekindled his relationship after a fallout between the two that saw them not speak to each other for eight years.

The 70-year-old singer took to social media on Monday, 4 December, to share a photo of himself with his mother. In the snap, the mother and son can be seen all dressed up and smiling for the shutterbugs.

"So sad to say that my mother passed away this morning. I only saw her last Monday and I am in shock," John wrote on Instagram.

He added, "Travel safe Mum. Thank you for everything. I will miss you so much. Love, Elton."

In 2015, Farebrother told the Daily Mail that John had asked her to cut ties with his two friends, Bob Halley and John Reid. She said that when she refused to do so her relationship with her son fell apart, with the mother and son duo not speaking to each other until 2008.

"'I told him: 'I'm not about to do that and drop them. Bob is like a son to me. He has always been marvelous to me and he lives nearby and keeps an eye on me,'" she told the publication, as quoted by People Magazine.

She added, "Then to my utter amazement, [John] told me he hated me. And he then banged the phone down. Imagine! To me, his mother!"

In 2016, John confirmed he had buried the hatchet with his mother ahead of her 90th birthday party.

"We are now back in touch," he told the Daily Mirror. "Out of respect for my mother's privacy, I have always shied away from speaking publicly about our relationship. However, I can say that we are now back in touch and have been so since my mother's 90th birthday."
