Peter Moores has included uncapped Nottinghamshire seamer Harry Gurney in his first England squad since returning as head coach to face Scotland in a one-day international next week.

James Anderson returns to 50-over cricket for the first time since June 2013 while Joe Root is recalled after missing the T20 World Cup with a broken thumb.

Captain Alastair Cook and Ian Bell are expected to open the batting against Scotland on 9 May in the first match of England's summer before a one-off T20 match and five-game ODI series with Sri Lanka.

"The start of the international summer is always incredibly exciting for everyone involved in England cricket and it has been pleasing to see so many players in good form early on this season," national selector James Whitaker said.

"On behalf of the selectors I would like to wish new coach Peter Moores, Alastair Cook and the whole squad all the best for a good performance against Scotland in what we know will be a very competitive fixture."
