Carberry had been seemingly discarded after the Ashes.

Tim Bresnan and Michael Carberry have been recalled to the England squad for the limited-overs matches against Sri Lanka.

Both players missed the 39-run Duckworth-Lewis victory against Scotland last week in Peter Moores' first match after returning as England head coach.

Bresnan has impressed since returning for Yorkshire while Carberry is back after being exiled following the Ashes series whitewash by Australia in the winter.

Elsewhere, Harry Gurney is included in the T20 squad in the absence of captain Stuart Broad, who is nursing a knee problem which is not expected to keep him out of the upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka and India. Eoin Morgan will deputise as captain.

From the T20 World Cup squad which failed to reach the semi-final, Jade Dernbach, Luke Wright, Stephen Parry and Michael Lumb all drop out while Ben Stokes remains injured.

England face world champions Sri Lanka in a one-off T20 match on 20 May at the Oval before a five-match one-day series beginning next Thursday.

National selector James Whitaker said: "Playing the World T20 Champions in front of a home crowd is a hugely exciting opportunity for this squad. With Stuart currently unavailable we have chosen Eoin to lead the side and I would like to wish him and the rest of the squad all the very best.

"We are entering an important period of 50-over cricket with a World Cup less than nine months away and this series against a skilful Sri Lankan side offers a chance to regain some momentum and for players to demonstrate the skill and passion we will need if we are to be serious contenders next year in Australia and New Zealand."
