England all-rounder Ben Stokes will miss the second Test against Sri Lanka in Durham with a knee problem. Warwickshire's Chris Woakes has been called up to replace the 24-year-old, who will miss the match on his home ground at Chester-le-Street.

Stokes appeared to pick up the injury while bowling on the second day of the innings and 88-run win over Sri Lanka at Headingley. He continued to bowl after receiving treatment but left the field early on day three as England went on to secure a comfortable victory in his absence.

A scan on Sunday [22 May] revealed the full extent of the injury which will see Stokes see a consultant before a decision is taken over his rehabilitation. Though the balance of the England team will be affected, stand-in Woakes will provide adequate cover should he be selected ahead of the uncapped Jake Ball.

Both Ball and Woakes will complete the second day of their respective County Championship matches for Nottinghamshire and Warwickshire before linking up with an otherwise unchanged England squad in the north-east on Tuesday [24 May]. The second Test of the three-match series against Sri Lanka starts on Friday [27 May].
