Overview

Everton managed to win the first game of the calendar year after they sealed a narrow 1-0 win over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park in the last league game. The Toffees have been in poor form since December as they went without a win in eight games played in all competitions.

Roberto Martinez is hopeful that Everton can seal three points at home and register a crucial win over their local rivals in order to kick-start their season. They are 12th on the table with 26 points from 23 games, 12 points behind seventh placed Liverpool.

Meanwhile, the Reds come into this crucial fixture after sealing a 2-1 victory over Bolton Wanderers in the replay of the fourth round of the FA Cup. Liverpool were trailing by a goal until Raheem Sterling equalised in the 86th minute before Philippe Coutinho netted the winner in stoppage time.

Brendan Rodgers

Brendan Rodgers' side are in fine form in recent times as they have lost only one game since their 3-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester United at Old Trafford. Liverpool will be looking to extend their impressive run when they face Everton on Saturday.

The clash at Goodison Park will be Steven Gerrard's last Merseyside derby as the former England international has already confirmed his decision to leave Liverpool after his contract expires at the end of the season.

What managers say

Roberto Martinez: "There is going to be a lot of talk about Gerrard but the only thing that matters to us is to try to use this as a springboard for our season. We picked up a very important win last weekend. The derby comes at the perfect moment for us. It can kick-start our season after the good moment we are sharing."

Brendan Rodgers: "He [Sturridge] is not far away from starting, he is really champing at the bit. But we want to make sure he is going to be available now for the rest of the season. If the timing is not quite right it can hurt us. His appetite to play is there, which is great. I need to speak with my staff and Daniel and make a decision."
