Mercedes also equalled the Red Bull Racing team's record for the number of pole positions by a single team in a season with the German driver taking Mercedes's 18th pole position of the season.

Rain is predicted for Sunday in Brazil, and if it arrives, we could be in for some surprises. Like the United States GP, there will be only 18 cars on the grid, following Caterham and Marussia's withdrawal due to financial issues.

Qualifying Review

The Mercedes team completed their 11th front row-lock out of the season, when Nico Rosberg took pole position ahead of Lewis Hamilton at the Brazilian Grand Prix.

Rosberg was ahead of his teammate through all the sessions during the weekend and they came the closest in the final session of qualifying with the German beating his British teammate by just .033 seconds.

However, it was not all comfortable for the Constructors' Champions as the Williams drivers pushed them to the limit, and were quite close to causing an upset. But in the end they had to settle for the second row, with home favourite Filipe Masssa taking third ahead of his teammate Valtteri Bottas.

The McLarens continue their good form from the Circuit of the Americas with Jenson Button taking fifth and the Red Bull's and Ferrari's along with McLaren's Kevin Magnussen filling out the remaining slots in the top 10.

With rain predicted for Sunday's race, drivers will be wary as the newly laid surface at Interlagos could get tricky.

Rosberg will be hoping to convert this pole into a win, after he failed to manage that at Austin the last time around.
