Ashley Cole is to be charged by the FA for misconduct, after the Chelsea player posted an inflammatory comment on Twitter he posted about the football association.

Responding to FA's judgement in the John Terry racism case, the England left-back left this message on Twitter that was picked up by major national news outlets. Cole subsequently deleted the tweet and issued an unreserved apology to the FA.

Cole issued a statement about the offensive remark, in which he said:

"I had just finished training and saw the captions on the TV screens in the treatment rooms about what was said in the FA commission ruling about me.

"I was really upset and tweeted my feelings in the heat of the moment. I apologise unreservedly for my comment about the FA."

A brief statement on the FA's website about the charges said:

"Ashley Cole has been charged by The FA in relation to a Twitter comment which was improper and/or brought the game into disrepute."

The 31-year-old has featured prominently for the national side in the last ten years, winning 98 caps. Cole could become only the sixth England player to reach 100 caps if he plays in England's upcoming matches against San Marino and Poland.
