Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
A monkey holding a shotgun is all I ever wanted from cinema 20th Century Fox

20th Century Fox has released the final trailer for July's biggest simian summer blockbuster, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

With plenty of enticing new footage, the trailer conveys a dark, epic tone as war between human and ape kind draws ever closer and more inevitable.

You can watch it below...

Andy Serkis stars in full motion capture as intelligent ape Caesar, the leader of a community of apes who have been living in the woods outside San Francisco for 15 years as humanity succumbs to the twin threats of a deadly simian flu and all-out world war.

A group of human survivors led by Gary Oldman find themselves at odds with the apes, blaming them for humanity's fall. All the while a family of much nicer human leads – Zero Dark Thirty's Jason Clarke, The Americans' Keri Russell and The Roads' Kodi Smit-McPhee – get caught up in the middle.

New director Matt Reeves (taking over from Rupert Wyatt) and a new cast of human stars hope to live up to the 2011 original, a film that surprised everyone who groaned at the thought.

Planet of the Apes prequel/reboot.

It was a testament to film that a narrative about intelligent monkeys could even be presented in a half-way serious manner, but from the footage we've seen it works, even if some won't be able to move past the whole talking monkeys part.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is released on 17 July 2014.
