Overview

Pennetta knocked out world No 2 Simona Halep in the semi-final of the fourth and final Grand Slam of the calendar year. It was a straight set victory over the Romanian tennis star with a final score of 6-3, 6-1.

The 33-year-old Italian has only dropped two sets so far in this year's US Open. Pennetta will be hoping she can seal another straight set victory to lift the Grand Slam title on Saturday. So far, this is her best achievement in her single's career as it is her first Grand Slam final.

Vinci, on the other hand has not made it to the last eight of any Grand Slam in her career. It is for the first time she has gone past the quarter-final and semi-final to make it to the final and she will also be looking for her first Grand Slam title.

In the previous round, Vinci defeated world No 1 Serena Williams to seal a berth in the final. After losing the first set, the Italian bounced back by winning the second set. Williams was two wins away from registering a calendar Grand Slam.

However, the US tennis star lost the final set to Vinci. The score was 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 as she made it to the final to face her compatriot Pennetta. Williams and Halep's eliminations are some of the few upsets of this year's US Open.
