A Florida father who organised a fight between his son and another teenager is facing a lengthy jail sentence after being convicted of beating his son's opponent.

Gary Johnson, 35, of Palm Bay, Florida, was found guilty of battery, child abuse, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and disorderly conduct.

Authorities were alerted to the incident by a YouTube video that went viral after being posted last August. In it, Johnson can be seen assaulting a 16-year-old boy who had just beaten his son in a fist fight.

Johnson allegedly allowed his son to fight in his own garden in order to referee the match after an argument erupted between the boys last summer.

He told the court that he got involved in the fight because the other boy was fighting unfairly and attacking his son from behind.

The victim, who cannot be named for legal reasons, said in court that he blacked out after the first few punches.

"He [Johnson] did a pushing motion against my face with his fists. That's when I swung at him. Next thing I know, he hit me on the ground."

"I had a split eyebrow, and my teeth were pushed back," he said. "The inside of my lip was tore[sic], well my teeth were penetrated through my lip, and the front of my teeth still now are numbed."

The youth said that he approached a police officer after the attack and was rushed to hospital.

Defending lawyers claimed the boy got what he deserved after he could be heard goading the 35-year-old man in the video.

Johnson could face up to 57 years imprisonment, though he is expected to see 10 when he is sentenced.
