Samsung has released its latest official Jelly Bean firmware, Android 4.1.2 XXBMC2, for Galaxy Note 10.1 N8020 Mobitel subscribers in Slovenia. The firmware update brings a handful of bug-fixes and should be treated as a regular maintenance update rather than as a major feature upgrade. Although the firmware is available for installation as an Over-The-Air (OTA) update only and not through Samsung KIES, it can still be downloaded and installed manually, using this guide.

Users are advised to update their device regularly to the latest firmware to eliminate known bugs in the software and ensure a trouble-free Android experience. IBTimes UK brings a step-by-step guide to update Galaxy Note 10.1 N8020 to the latest Android 4.1.2 XXBMC2 Jelly Bean official firmware.

Pre-Requisites

  • XXBMC2 official firmware and the instructions provided in this guide are applicable to the Galaxy Note 10.1 N8020 LTE model only, and will not work on any other device. Verify the device's model number by navigating to Settings > About Tablet.
  • Back up important data and settings including the EFS folder (to save IMEI number) on the phone via one of the recommended custom recovery tools such as ClockworkMod (CWM) or TWRP, as it creates a complete image of the existing tablet setup.
  • Ensure the tablet has at least 80 percent battery charge to prevent unexpected device shutdown (due to battery drain) while installing the official firmware.
  • Verify that the correct USB drivers are installed for the tablet on computer (download Galaxy Note 10.1 N8020 USB drivers)
  • Make sure USB Debugging mode is enabled on the tablet by navigating to Settings > Developer Options (if device is running Android 4.0 or later) or Settings > Applications > Development (if tablet is running Android 2.3 or earlier).
  • The installation of this official firmware requires ODIN flash tool for Windows OS, while Linux and Mac users should use CrossOver utility to run ODIN on their computer.

Key Points to Note

  • Access to custom recovery tools and custom ROMs will be lost soon after installing the official stock firmware on your device, as custom versions will be replaced by their stock counterparts.
  • Root access to the device is also lost once the official firmware is installed. So, you need to re-root the device once again to regain full system access and be able to install third-party root apps, custom ROMs and latest system tweaks on it.
  • As this is an official release from Samsung, it will neither increase the binary counter nor void the device's hardware warranty.
  • If "MD5 hash value is invalid" error message appears in Odin message box then just re-download the firmware to resolve this issue.
