Samsung has rolled out another official software update, Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean with base firmware XXEMD2, for the international version of Galaxy S3 bearing model number GT-I9300. The XXEMD2 build is an unbranded version of firmware which means it can be installed on any Galaxy S3 I9300 unit.

The XXEMD2 Jelly Bean is originally for the users in Poland and can be installed through Samsung KIES server. However, users from supported regions also install the update using Odin flashing tool.

Galaxy S3 users, who fail to update their devices using official method for being region specific, may follow our step-by-step guide to install the same manually.

Per-requisites

1) Install USB Drivers for Samsung Galaxy S3 to connect the Android device with the computer.

2) Enable USB Debugging Mode on the phone to connect it with the computer and use Android SDK with it. [Press Menu>> Settings>> Applications. From there navigate and click on Development option and ensure the USB Debugging Mode is turned on.]

3) As the tutorial might wipe all data of the phone, create a backup. If the device is having any custom recoveries such as CWM/TWRP already installed then backup data using the recovery.

4) The battery of the phone should have charge above 80 per cent.

5) The device should be factory unlocked and not locked to a particular carrier.

6) The phone will lose custom ROM with the installation of official firmware. Additionally, it will lose custom recovery such as ClockworkMod/TWRP which will be replaced by stock recovery.

7) The device will no longer belong to a rooted version with the installation of official firmware.

8) The Android 4.1.2 XXEMD2 Jelly Bean works only on Samsung Galaxy S3 I9300, flashing this on any other variant might brick the device. Therefore, verify the model number of Galaxy S3 by navigating to Settings>> About Phone>> Model number.

Steps to install Android 4.1.2 XXEMD2 Jelly Bean on Samsung Galaxy S3 I9300

Step-1: Download Android 4.1.2 I9300XXEMD2 Jelly Bean official update for Samsung Galaxy S3 to the computer

Step-2: Extract the downloaded zip file to get a .tar.md5 file along with some other files

Step-3: Download Odin v3.07 which will help to install the Jelly Bean firmware. Extract the zip to get Odin3 v3.07.exe along with few other files

Step-4: Power off the Galaxy S3 and place the phone into Download Mode. Press and hold Volume Down and Home buttons together then press the Power button until the construction Android robot and a triangle is seen. Now press the Power button again to continue to

Step-5: Run Odin on the computer

Step-6: Connect the Galaxy S3 to the computer using USB cable while it is in the Download Mode. Wait until Odin detects the device. When the phone is connected successfully, the ID: COM box in Odin will turn yellow with COM port number. Also, the successful connection will be indicated by an Added message in Odin.

If the Added message does not come then try another USB port, try the one located at the back side of the computer. In case that too does not work then re-install USB driver.

Step-7: Now select these files extracted from the I9300XXEMD2 Jelly Bean folder to install on the phone

a) Click on PDA and select file with .tar.md5 extension

b) Click on Phone and select file with MODEM in its name

c) Click on CSC and select file with CSC in its name

d) Click on PIT and select the .pit file

Note: Ignore the last three steps (b, c and d) in case such files are not found.

Step-8: In Odin, verify the Auto Reboot and F.Reset Time checkboxes are selected. But uncheck the Re-Partition option; click it only when a .pit file is being used

Step-9: Finally hit the Start button in Odin. The installation should begin now and would take about few minutes to complete

Step-10: Upon the completion of the installation process, PASS message will appear in Odin indicating successful installation. The device will then restart automatically. After the home screen appears on the phone, unplug the USB cable from the device to disconnect it from the computer

Samsung Galaxy S3 should be now updated with official Android 4.1.2 XXEMD2 Jelly Bean update. Navigate to Settings>> About Phone to verify the software version running on the device.

Steps to root Samsung Galaxy S3 I9300 on Android 4.1.2 XXEMD2 Jelly Bean

Step-1: Download CF-Auto-Root file for Samsung Galaxy S3 to the computer and then extract the downloaded zip file

File name: CF-Auto-Root-m0-m0xx-gti9300.zip

Step-2: Download Odin3 v3.07 which will help to root the Jelly Bean firmware. Extract the zip

Step-3: Power off the Galaxy S3 and then boot the device into Download Mode. Press and hold Volume Down and Home buttons together and then press the Power button until the construction Android robot and a triangle appears. Nown press the Power button to confirm to enter into Download Mode

Step-4: Open Odin on the computer

Step-5: Connect the Galaxy S3 to the computer using USB cable while it is in the Download Mode. When the phone is connected successfully, one of the ID: COM box will turn yellow with the COM port number. This step is likely to take some time

Step-6: In Odin, click the PDA button and select the CF-Auto-Root-m0-m0xx-gti9300.zip

Step-7: Configure Odin settings. Verify the Auto Reboot and F.Reset Time checkboxes are selected in Odin. Also, ensure the Re-Partition is uncheck

Step-8: Double check everything and then click the Start button in Odin. The installation should begin now and would take about few minutes to complete

Step-9: Once the installation process is completed, the phone will reboot into Recovery Mode automatically and install the root package. The ID: COM box will turn green indicating successful installation

Step-10: when the home screen appears on the phone, unplug the USB cable from the device to disconnect it from the computer

Troubleshoot

Sometimes the device does not boot into Recovery Mode automatically and root the device. If that happens then do the entire procedure again. If the phone is still not rooted, once again perform the tutorial but in Odin ensure that the Auto Reboot option is not checked. Then after step-9, do the following:

a) Pull out the battery to turn off the phone forcefully

b) Boot the device into Recovery mode by pressing and holding Volume Up, Home and Power buttons together. This will start the installation process of rooting the phone.

Samsung Galaxy S3 I9300 running on Android 4.1.2 XXEMD2 Jelly Bean is now rooted successfully. Open the app drawer of the device and check for an app called SuperSU. Also, to ensure the root method is installed and working properly, verify with the Root Checker app from Google Play Store.
