The pair, who lived at Archdeacon Street in Gloucester, were initially arrested on suspicion of attempted murder but the charge changed once the boy died.

They are accused of child neglect and will appear before magistrates in Cheltenham later on Tuesday.

The child was rushed to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital on Saturday (30 July) with injuries so severe medics called police at 11am. He was transferred to Bristol Children's Hospital where was in stable but critical condition but died a day later.

Forensic officers were seen at the family's maisonette on Monday and floral tributes were left outside their home.

A spokeswoman for Gloucestershire Police said: "A police investigation into the baby's death continues."

A police spokesman said on Sunday: "Police were called to Gloucestershire Royal Hospital at 11am on Saturday July 30 after concerns were raised for a baby's welfare. We wish to reassure the local community that this is thought to be an isolated and contained incident, with no wider risk to the public."
