PlayStation Store listings for Sony Santa Monica's upcoming PS4 exclusive God of War may have revealed its anticipated release date. According to localised listings for North America and Chile, the game is set to launch on 22 March 2018.

This would be in line with assertions from Sony that game will be released in "early 2018". The timing suggests whatever its release date may be, it will be announced at either The Game Awards on Thursday (7 December) or Sony's PlayStation Experience keynote a day later.

Each PS Store listing has since reverted to a placeholder date of 31 December 2018, but screenshots of the revealing listings have circulated online.

One note against 22 March being the game's release date is that it's a Thursday, which isn't traditionally a day on which major titles launch.

Typically, they arrive in stores on a Tuesday or Friday.

God of War was announced at E3 2016 and follows Kratos on a new adventure into Norse mythology, whereas previous games in the action series have been inspired by Greek mythology.

That means a whole new host of gods and monsters for Kratos to violently dispatch as he journeys with his son Atreus, who will ever-present in the game and able to assist his father during combat.

Trailers showing off gameplay for God of War were released at Sony keynotes at E3 in June and Paris Games Week in October.

God of War will be the first game in the series since God of War: Ascension in 2013. A collection of the first two titles was released in 2014 for PS Vita, with a remaster of God of War 3 following for PS4 a year later.
