Jesse Williams and his wife Aryn Drake-Lee have decided to part ways as they filed for divorce on 11 April, People magazine reported. The 35-year-old, who plays Dr Jackson Avery on the medical drama Grey's Anatomy, and the real estate broker were married for five years and dated for half a decade before tying the knot in September 2012.

According to documents made available to the entertainment website, the couple's estrangement is an amicable one and the two are seeking joint custody of their two children – daughter Sadie, 3, and 18-month-old son Maceo.

However, the Just Jared reported that Williams and Drake-Lee did not sign a prenuptial agreement and The Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants 2 actor has reportedly asked the court to deny his wife spousal support.

The two met long before Williams decided to try his hand at acting. At the time he was teaching at a high school in New York.

"I was a teacher when I met her, so she's been with me through all different facets of my career," he told USA Today back in 2010. "She's stuck with me through thick and thick and thick and thin."

Williams gushed about his then-girlfriend's independence in the previous year. "She is her own person, he said. "Being intelligent and self-made is a big deal for me," he told People at the time.

Most recently, in 2016, he thanked Drake-Lee for her constant support during a politically-charged speech he gave at the BET Awards in Los Angeles where he was presented with the humanitarian award for his work in fighting for equal rights.
