Grey's Anatomy season 11, episode 10 titled 'The Bed's Too Big Without You' airs this week and going by the latest spoilers, it looks like tough times lie ahead for Meredith as she struggles on her own without any support from Derek and Cristina.

"I love the idea that this could possibly mean that for the first time in her life at the hospital, she has neither Cristina nor Derek, and therefore is essentially alone and how she's going to cope with that. It's going to be very interesting for her," the show's writer Shonda Rhimes told Entertainment Weekly.

Rhimes also told TV Line that Meredith's solo-journey of making a name for herself in the field of medicine, is not going to be easy.

"It's a struggle to get where she's going when you've been living in the shadow of your mother, and you've also been living in the shadow of Cristina and Derek," she stated. "It is a struggle to push yourself to become something that you're not 100-percent sure that you can be."

Reportedly, Meredith's solitude will be a major story arc in the upcoming episodes. During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the show's executive producer teased that "this journey is really about Meredith coming into her own as a surgeon, figuring out who she is and who she wants to be, standing on her own two feet and trying to be her own person for the first time without the support of Cristina and without the support of Derek."

Meanwhile, according to the official synopsis of the upcoming episode 10, "April stays optimistic as Arizona begins testing on her baby; Dr. Herman plans out a crash course in fetal surgery; and Owen and Callie encourage each other to get back into the dating scene. Meanwhile, Meredith, Maggie and Bailey use the 3D printer to gain a better understanding of their patient's tumour."

Grey's Anatomy season 11, episode 10 airs Thursday, 5 February at 8pm ET on ABC.
