PS4

Fans of the PS4 have always been upset about its limited support for playback of local media files. However, for those of you who are hoping to watch more than just content from Netflix or Amazon Instant Video, a new solution is now available.

A report from Wololo details that users can watch videos by streaming them from their PC to their PS4. Users will require a decent local network, a good PC and they will be able to stream local 1080p movies to their PS4.

This means that PS4 owners will be able to access their entire digital library from the comfort of their living room. The method uses the Plex media server and the power of HTML5. Users will typically attempt to stream videos in the PS4 browser, in full screen, through HTML5.

IBTimes UK would like to remind its readers that it will not be held responsible for any damage to the device. Please proceed at your own risk.

The method requires users to first install the free plex media server on their PC. After this, add video folders to it and then access them through the plex web interface from the PS4′s web browser. The following step-by-step instruction should help you achieve it.

Step 1: Install Plex Media Server on Your PC

The application can be downloaded for free over here. Fire it up after installation and you'll notice a new icon on your task bar that indicates the app's status.

Step 2: Add Videos to Your Plex Library on Your PC

Go to 127.0.0.1:32400/web on your web browser. The PLEX interface should appear there.

Step 3: Open Plex on your PS4 and Tweak the Settings

Users will have to know their PCs local IP address. Type "ipconfig" in the command line on Windows to get this information.

On the PS4 browser, type in your IP address followed by ":32400/web". The end result should look something like 192.395.2.3:32400/web. You should now see the plex interface on your PS4 screen.

More Tweaking

Ever since the arrival of the 1.70 PS4 update, there have been video format compatibility issues on the PS4. We recommend changing a few parameters to get things working.

First, users have to force AAC Audio. To do this, navigate to Settings > Web > Player > Show Advanced > Prefer AAC Audio. Enable this setting from the PS4. Avoid this step, and your PS4 will never play videos and will instead show the "buffering" animation.

If you have completed all these steps accurately, you should be able to start streaming movies from your computer to your PS4.
