Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg has qualified in pole position for the 2016 Hungarian Grand Prix, as he looks to open up a gap at the top over his Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton. The race was marred by heavy showers and stoppages as the drivers tried to manoeuvre themselves in the twisting Hungaroring circuit. This was Rosberg's 26th career pole finish and the 50th start from the first row, but he will be looking to do better on this track, having never ever won the race in his career.

The German made his fastest lap in one minute and 19.965 seconds to overpower the competition in a qualifier that lasted for over two hours owing to incessant rain and less than ideal conditions. Hamilton, who is only a point behind his teammate, finished the race 0.143 seconds behind Rosberg, making for Mercedes' sixth front row dominance for the season.

Hamilton was unlucky to miss out on pole as on his way to his best lap he came across Spaniard Fernando Alonso's McLaren which was spinning off the track and he had to take evasive action to protect his car. He lost precious seconds in that context which allowed Rosberg to run the rule over Hamilton in a bid to try and protect the slender lead at the top.

The two Red Bull drivers, Daniel Ricciardo and Dutch teenager Max Verstappen, were third and fourth ahead of Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari. Kimi Raikonnen failed to finish the race owing to the treacherous conditions.

Carlos Sainz of Toro Rosso and Alonso were sixth and seventh ahead of Jenson Button, who was in the second McLaren, while Nico Hulkenberg of Force India and Valtteri Bottas of Williams finished the top 10 spots in qualifying.
