A five-year-old boy who was caught urinating in a field has had his penis chopped off by the landlord.

The incident happened in the Korali village of Pratapgarh in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, where a spate of such crimes is being reported in the past few weeks.

Police say the victim, who goes by the single name of Ritesh, was wandering in the village alone. When he was urinating in one of the fields, he was caught red-handed by the land owner Durgesh Maurya, who slapped him.

Maurya went on to chop off the boy's genitals for his mistake, reports the news agency IANS.

Although the boy was bleeding profusely, Ritesh managed to reach his home to report the incident to his parents, who filed a case against Maurya with the police.

A complaint has also been registered against Maurya's son who too is alleged to be involved in the crime.

The police are yet to arrest the suspects as both remain at large following the incident.

In the last fortnight, local media have been reporting numerous cases of serious crimes involving children and women in Uttar Pradesh.

The newly-installed federal government has urged the provincial administration led by chief minister Akhilesh Yadav to deal with the situation adequately. However, the local government has been blaming the media for exaggerating such crimes.
