International Peace Envoy Kofi Annan leaves his hotel in Damascus ready for a day filled with anticipation as he heads to meet with Syrian President, Bashar al-Assad. Though no-one's sure how much time Annan will have with the President, the negotiations are sure to be strident and wanting much, especially as Kofi Annan's already admitted that his ceasefire plan - to try and end 16 months of intense violence – hasn't worked.

As Iran continued to support Syria's stance while warning of 'catastrophe' in the region if a political solution isn't found, the country's state television station broadcast footage at the weekend of naval missile drills, just to remind others how they can and will defend themselves against outside 'aggression'.

The civil war though is relentless: more amateur and unverified footage of a second consecutive day of heavy shelling - this time in the Jurat al Shayah district of Homs - has appeared on social media. Smoke clearly billowing from the barrage of attacks. Human rights activists say residential areas of Deir al-Zor city and Deraa province are also being pummelled.

And someone has seen fit to remind the world of the human cost of this brutality: these harrowing scenes are of a mass burial of bodies wrapped in now bloodied white cloths are those killed in a mortar attack which hit a recent funeral procession. Scenes from the horrific consequences of this conflict which Kofi Annan will urge President Assad to play his part in putting a stop to.
