Overview

Kings XI have won only two of their last five games in the tournament and are in desperate need of a win to keep their hopes alive of making it to the knockouts. Batting has again proved to be their Achilles' heel this season, with the top order failing to make an impact thus far in the tournament. Captain Adam Gilchrist has been woefully out of form and has failed to provide the blistering start that has been his trademark in the previous editions.

However, Punjab will be buoyed by their performance in the reverse fixture earlier in the tournament when they managed to restrict Pune to a paltry score of 99 runs and won the match by eight wickets with more than seven overs to spare. The bowlers stole the show with an impeccable performance with the ball, something which has not been repeated on a regular basis this tournament.

Their only other win in the tournament came against defending Champions Kolkata Knight Riders where a cameo from Manpreet Gony in the dying overs of the game gave the Kings XI a fighting total to defend. Azhar Mahmood lead the fight in the bowling department, taking three wickets by conceding only 21 runs, sealing what was a brilliant overall performance by the team.

Pune Warriors on the other hand will be looking to take revenge for the embarrassment meted out to them in the return fixture. Pune have played a game more than Punjab but have also managed only two wins thus far in the tournament. The Warriors need a major change in fortune of they have to overturn their gruesome record since their introduction to the IPL in 2011. The Subarata Roy owned club have finished in the bottom two places of the IPL in the previous two iterations and need a win here to have any chance of changing their fortunes around.

However, the Warriors have shown glimpses of class in the tournament, having won games against Rajasthan Royals and the Chennai Super Kings in comprehensive fashion. A brilliant performance with the bat from Aaron Finch (67) and Steven Smith (39*) at the end saw Pune pose a target of 160 for CSK to win. Bhuvneshwar Kumar was the pick of the bowlers, taking two wickets for only 12 runs and was backed up by Ashok Dinda and Mitchell Marsh who took two wickets each. Their only other win came against the Rajasthan Royals, whom they beat by seven wickets.
