The US is looking into claims that Iranian has captured an unmanned US drone aircraft which was flying in its airspace over Gulf waters.

The Revolutionary Guards, speaking to the Fars news agency claimed they had brought down a ScanEagle which had been flying on a number of reconnaissance flights over the Gulf region. The Drone is believed to be one of the smaller, less sophisticated drones which are usually launched from large warships.

This latest claim from Iran follows the US announcement just last month that US surveillance drone had been shot by Iran as it flew in international airspace. Iran in response said the aircraft had entered its airspace and considered continued violation of Iranian airspace "illegal and provocative acts"

The United States and Iran are locked in an ongoing dispute over Tehran's nuclear programme. The U.S. and its allies believe Tehran is trying to develop an atomic bomb, while Iran says its programme is purely peaceful.
