Oscar Pistorius will be banned from athletics for five years in the wake of his jail sentence for shooting dead his girlfriend, say reports.

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) is set to disbar Pistorius from competing until late 2019.

It means the runner is certain to miss the Paralympics in Rio, next year. But Pistorius may yet be able to compete at the next Games in 2020.

The BBC reported the IPC shall rule Pistorius should not be allowed to enter any of its events for five years.

If the ban does come into effect, it would match the prison sentence handed to Pistorius for killing Reeva Steenkamp, 29.

Critics, who claim the jail term for homicide is not long enough, may find an unfavourable comparison in the way it matches his ban from competing in lucrative competitions.

Pistorius could be free from prison within a year it was claimed following sentencing.
